Couple who have danced together for 35 years arrive and take the Master Grand Nationals by storm

Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee have been dance partners since 1981, strutting their stuff in over 300 competitions. They won many of those competitions, including the National Shag Dance Championships 9 out of its first 10 years!
Theyâre legends.
Theyâre in the National Beach Shaggers Hall of Fame, the National Swing Dance Hall of Fame, the National Boppers Hall of Fame, recipients of the Chairmanâs Lifetime Achievement Award From the Society of Stranders, two-time USA Grand National Masters ChampionsâŠand the list goes on.

The National Shag Dance Championship trophy is called the Charlie and Jackie in their honor.
Need we say more? Because we could!
Letâs just say itâs no surprise that just one of their many online performances â uploaded back in December of 2013 â has over 3 million views. Itâs from the Masters Division at the Grand Nationals that year.
Before Charlie and Jackie are even on the dance floor the audience is on their feet cheering for them â no doubt some audience members are there just to see them.

Theyâre a striking pair â all that dance has done them good and theyâre clearly just as sprightly as they ever were.
Once they start moving theyâre ageless â theyâve got a few decades on us and weâre not moving like that anytime soon! Theyâre positively gliding on air.

The shag might have originated in the 1940s but itâs safe to say that people like Charlie and Jackie are helping to keep it alive. Charlie and Jackie dance the Carolina Shag, which, like all swing dance styles, is descended from the Jitterbug.
As they dance to the favorite shag tune âQueen of the 88s,â by Kelly Hunt, everyone is in awe as Charlie bursts into a series of twists.
Apparently those fast-footed moves were just a warm-up for the real tricks!

Oh, and in case youâre wondering about their âsmoothâ moves, yes, theyâre married to one another!
The couple wed in 1989.

We love those light-as-a-feather elastic-style moves and the pair looks like theyâre bound together with rubber bands.
Itâs no surprise to hear the audience cheer throughout the performance.

If youâre ever near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina â the place where the Carolina Shag was born and where Charlie and Jackie call home â theyâll ever teach you the shag for $60/hour ($85 if you want both sets of feet in the same room).
If you donât believe that itâs worth the effort, the video of this performance is a must-see. These two are really something special.

âI have watched a lot of couples doing the Shag but this is the best of them all⊠Their moves are so effortless and smooth⊠They just glide across the dance floor together and need I add how they compliment each other as wellâŠâ said one viewer.
The only thing that commenters have to argue about is which is a better dancer. (Our vote is for Charlie.)
Weâre just glad to know theyâre both still at it, teaching the next generation of dancers and spreading awareness and appreciation for the shag.
