Woodcarver makes gorgeous German shepherd bench so he can sit beside his best friend again

Will we ever get tired of talking about the German Shepherd? I doubt it. They are so intelligent and loving – and their looks are worth a few pages on their own too. The breed’s iconic pointed snout and brown coat are cemented in our hearts.

There’s no mistaking a German Shepherd for anything else. So it’s no surprise that so many artists are keen on capturing the breed’s likeness.

And whether it’s in 2D or 3D, the German Shepherd’s beauty still shines through. Some very skillful artists, like u/stoneshank on Reddit, have taken to woodcarving to capture the subject.

They assure us that they don’t do this for a living, seemingly not too confident in their carving skills. I’d say they did a pretty rocking job. It’s obvious it’s a “German Shepherd.”

Plus, a depiction of a German Shepherd is always welcome!

How about taking it up one level? Add some colors in there, and your subject comes to life. Though brown isn’t exactly a bright color, the various shades of it can work together quite well. Every dark and light brown on the German Shepherd makes their coat what it is, and this wood carving captures that very nicely.

This one is just fantastic, and “realistic” definitely describes it. I’d do a double-take too.

I suppose the cream brown color of natural wood is a good base to work with when making a German Shepherd.

Check out this beautiful carving by a woodcarver named Mike Jones. He shared the image on the “Chainsaw Carvers” Facebook group where it quickly went viral.

But the best part? The entire carving is actually a bench.

“New German shepherd bench finished,” he wrote in the post. “Because who wouldn’t want to sit next to their best friend again?”

Here’s a progress shot from another woodcarver.

This one is from Old Trail Chainsaw Carving. Far from finished, but still a long way from being just a tree trunk anymore. Looks good so far!

Deviating from the wood theme a little, we’ve got a gorgeous pumpkin carving here from Reddit user glock23headup.

They did a superb job carving that dog’s lovely face into the pumpkin.

It certainly stands out from most jack-o’-lanterns!

But that’s not the last carved-depiction of the breed on this page. Moving back to wood, we’ve got a couple more to look at.

This one’s from Timberjack Chainsaw Carvings.

The pose? Well, sitting proudly like the good boys and girls we know the breed to be.

It looks almost as protective and loyal as the actual animal. Stand a couple of meters away, and you might not even know the difference.

If you’re curious to see a time-lapse of how these are made, then Simon O’Rourke has you covered.

He’s uploaded a time-lapse video of him carving Chelia the German Shepherd.

The wooden block starts out as such, but with the artist’s touch and some time, it’s a wooden block no longer. To paraphrase some of the great sculptors, it’s like the dog was inside the wood all along. The carver just freed them.

Little by little, Chelia comes out. Fur by fur, paw by paw, until she’s standing there in her whole glory.

Chelia is an actual German Shepherd.

Simon tells us that it’s his client’s German Shepherd.

That very well speaks to how much this client loves their German Shepherd, no?

Though I can’t see the real Chelia, I’m sure she’ll love the little wooden depiction Simon’s made here.
