Woodpeckers hide thousands of tiny acorns in the walls of man's pool house

Doing any home renovation is like eating a mystery box of chocolates; as Forrest Gump said, “you never know what you’re going to get.” Sometimes you find unexpected surprises that are actually welcome, like money or jewelry. Often times, though, the surprises that await you aren’t so wonderful. From dry rot to leaks, there are a million things to worry over. One thing that most people don’t need to worry about, though, is acorns. That is, of course, unless your name’s Mark von Thaden.

Mark decided to do some much-needed home repairs last winter in February when he noticed dozens of holes had been punched through the siding of his pool house. Clearly, a woodpecker or two had been hard at work on Mark’s walls for quite some time.

As Mark got to work it became evident that the woodpeckers in his area are more diligent than he first thought.

Just about everywhere he looked in his pool house, the walls were riddled with holes. These weren’t just tiny holes, either. They were all large enough that you could see straight through to the outside.

With nothing left to do but get to work, Mark started by removing the wall panels. When he peeled back the insulation material, though, he found something that he never would have expected. He had to share his frustrating findings with the world, and so he whipped out his camera and started recording.

As he pans around the pool house with his camera, you can see that he wasn’t joking about the number the woodpeckers had done on his siding.

As Mark recorded the extent of the damage to his pool house, he decided that he is no longer a fan of woodpeckers.

In fact, in his frustrated state, he confesses in the video that he now “hates” them. Seems like a strong sentiment for a few holes, doesn’t it? Well, you might feel differently if you discovered what Mark did.

On further inspection, Mark realized the annoying woodpeckers weren’t just drilling holes into his pool house for no reason. Though, it might have been better for Mark if they had been. Rather, the birds thought they were making practical use of Mark’s pool house walls by converting it into their very own food pantry!

Not only were the woodpeckers using Mark’s walls for storage, but it turned out they had amassed quite the stock in their makeshift storehouse.

As mark ripped away insulation, he was showered with tens of thousands of acorns!

From the looks of it, there were years and years worth of acorns being stored in the walls of the pool house. The practice of boring holes to store food isn’t exactly a strange phenomenon. Woodpeckers commonly peck small holes into a tree or other piece of wood so they can pack it with a snack for later.

What the poor birds “renovating” Mark’s walls didn’t seem to know, though, was that the walls were hollow. Rather than snugly nestling the acorns, the woodpeckers popped them through the holes in the wall where the fell to the floor. There, they remained trapped within the walls.

Mark had no way of knowing that a proverbial avalanche of acorns had been being built up between the insulation and siding.

Just in case no one would believe him, Mark takes the camera with him as he gives everyone a show-and-tell of what the birds managed to accomplish in his small pool house.

Mark grabs a bottom corner of insulation and rips it upward as hundreds more acorns start tumbling out. It’s really something you have to see to believe.

While there’s no doubt Mark has a lot of clean-up in his future, at least the discovery has blessed him with the opportunity to check out a more durable material for his siding. Though it sucks to be Mark in this particular situation, at least he understands his feathered neighbors better than before.

Oh, how I hate woodpeckers,” Mark utters at the close of his video.

We hope that in time Mark will be able to forgive his woodpecker pals. In the meantime, we can’t help but laugh at the video of their work on repeat. To see what has Mark’s panties in a twist, watch the video below.
