The world’s oldest cat celebrates his 32nd birthday

Rubble the ginger and white tabby cat has been alive for six different presidencies. And there’s a good chance he’ll see a seventh.

Just think how different the world was in May 1988. Most homes didn’t have a computer. The Internet was something that only the military used. America’s main adversary was the Soviet Union.

Many things have changed since the late 80s. Yet people still love cats just as much. And one owner still loves the same cat from all those years ago.

In May 1988, Rubble the tabby cat came into the world. From the moment he opened his eyes, he had a love of life. In fact, he thought it would be great to stick around in the world for a long time.

In May 2020, Rubble celebrated his 32nd birthday. That means that he’s had a longer life than Jimi Hendrix, Heath Ledger, Hank Williams and many others.

As Rubble’s extreme longevity implies, his owner, Michele Foster, has done an incredible job of looking after him. She said that her secret to giving Rubble a long and happy life is treating him like a child.

“I have always treated him like a child. I don’t have any children and had another cat called Meg – who passed at the age of 25. If you care about something, no matter what it is, it does last.” – Michele Foster.

Foster was just over 20 years old when she adopted Rubble as a kitten.

The lucky cat came into her life thanks to Foster’s sister, whose friend’s cat had just given birth to a litter. Foster had just moved away from home for the first time. She was lonely so jumped at the chance to take the cat into her life.

At the time, Foster had no way of knowing it, but this was the beginning of an incredibly long friendship.

Rubble has been a loving cat for his entire life. Foster has said that when he got old, he became a little more grumpy. But on the whole, she feels privileged to have had such a nice cat for so long.

When Rubble reached 30, his vets threw him a major birthday party. He had been their oldest patient for a very long time, so they felt like they owed it to him!

The vets gave him some milk, food pouches and some medication as gifts.

Yes, Rubble was and is on medication, but not much. He needs pills to keep his blood pressure healthy. But that’s really his only health condition, meaning that Rubble could be with Foster for a long time yet!

While Rubble may be the world’s oldest living cat, he does not yet hold the record for world’s oldest ever cat. The current record holder is a cat named Creme Puff. This cat was born in August 1967. She died in August 2005, shortly after her 38th birthday.

Will Rubble outlive Creme Puff? Foster is not concerned with breaking records. She just wants to give Rubble the best life she can. No one can doubt that for the last 32 years, she’s done this. Hopefully, Rubble has many more years ahead.
