Reality television is big no matter where you go in the world.

For some reason, the most successful of these reality shows are singing competitions. Many say that the trend started over a decade ago when American Idol first hit screens in 2002. This may be true, but there are many other singing competitions that are riding that wave of success.

Some of these popular programs include The Voice and The X Factor. Both of these shows look for contestants with a little special something that can help catapult them into fame.

The X Factor was discontinued in the United States, but it remains a popular program in other countries.

The X Factor and similar shows tell the story of how an ordinary person becomes extraordinary. One example of these stories is from the 2011 season. Like any other contestant, Samantha Brook’s story began with an offstage interview.

Samatha Brooks was a 31-year-old barmaid from North Wales. During her interview, she explains that she works as a barmaid for the social atmosphere and the tip money. However, she says her real dream was to compete on The X Factor and perform as a singer. She said that despite her preparation, she is nervous about her audition.

After the interview, she walks out to meet the judges.

Immediately, the judges take note of her bright personality. Her nerves are high, so she responds to all the judges’ questions in a jittery rapid-fire manner.

After she calmed down a bit, the judges make some introductions and ask why she came on the show. Was it for fame? Fortune? Men?

After a brief pause, she admits that she has come to the competition for men…one man in particular. One of the judges! Everyone laughed in response to her joke and she seemed a bit more relaxed for her performance.

Finally, she starts to sing.

She introduces her song “One Moment in Time” by Whitney Houston. It’s a daring choice due to the complicated vocal technique it requires.

Even though she is nervous, Brooks takes a deep breath and begins her audition piece. She sounded so confident and clear even from her first few notes.

The crowd immediately rewarded her with some applause.

The song builds and gets more difficult, but Brooks rises to the occasion. She even takes her hat off as the song approaches its big hit.

It’s no surprise, but Brooks hits the climax of the song perfectly. The notes are on point, and her energy matches the song well.

By that point, the entire crowd is giving her a standing ovation! Even the judges were impressed by her performance.

When asked how she has remained secret for so long she has a shocking answer.

Brookes says that the reason she had never shared her voice up to this point is that she suffered from body image issues. The judges are quick to assure her that she is beautiful.
