Brave Yorkie fights off coyote to protect its owner

Small doesn’t mean weak.

Smaller breeds of dogs like chihuahua, Pomeranians, or Yorkie are often perceived as lap dogs that are much more comfortable being toys than pets.

This is also the same reason why people think larger working dogs like shepherds are best at fighting off danger. But in Canada, a six-year-old Yorkie proved that even small dogs can do heroic things.

Lily Kwan was walking Macy around their neighborhood when disaster struck.

Unbeknownst to her, they were being stalked by a coyote. The coyote has been seen prowling around the area and Kwan even saw posts warning the people about the animal.

While they were walking on the sidewalk, the coyote approached them both. Kwan thought at that moment that she was about to become a statistic.

The coyote pounced on the duo.

A collection of CCTV security systems captured how the situation unfolded. Kwan ran with Macy in tow. Following close behind is the coyote.

At one point, the coyote bit Macy and lifted her up. This might’ve prompted the little girl to let go of Macy’s leash so she won’t be yanked.

She ran to a neighbor’s house.

When Macy successfully grappled off from the coyote, she quickly followed Kwan. The girl began hitting doorbells and was screaming for help.

“I ran to the sidewalk and started screaming for help. No one heard me,” she said to CTV News. Macy, however, tried her best to keep the coyote at bay and away from Kwan.

Eventually, a neighbor came out and chased the wild dog away.

While Kwan was relatively unharmed after the encounter, the same couldn’t be said for Macy. The Yorkie sustained injuries on her torso and legs.

Macy was then rushed to an animal hospital with people helping the Kwans with the expenses. Dorothy Kwan, the mother, said on their GoFund Me page that she is a single mom and that rehabilitating Macy could be costly.

Their initial target is $10,000 but the actual donations reached thrice that number. The Kwans were grateful for the people but most especially to Macy.

“She’s a super brave dog, I love her so much and I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote,” Lily said as quoted by PEOPLE.

Her mom also pointed out that Macy will do anything for their family. While she was worried, she was also not surprised that Macy fought back.

All over the internet, Macy is being hailed as a hero.

They commented that Macy was the best example of a “good girl”. They also pointed out how amazing she was especially after seeing that she’d do anything to save and protect her human.

Macy has since recovered from her injuries and the family said that the little dog was now doing what she is good at – protecting her family.

“She’s a super brave dog, I love her so much and I just thought this tiny dog could protect this huge human being, trying to fight off this huge coyote,” Lily said.
