5-year-old girl springs into action after mom has seizure and falls into the pool
Parents always teach their children what to do in emergencies as much as they could and as much as the child wants to learn.
They teach their children to avoid talking to strangers, look for the police when they’re lost, call 911 when their safety is threatened, and stay away from fire, among others.
But, sometimes, because of the children’s age, the parent’s don’t expect much more than just the children remembering the basic safety information.
That’s why it was so surprising to find out that when Tracy Anderwald was drowning in her sister’s pool, her five-year-old daughter knew exactly what to do.
Tracy and her daughter, Allison, 5, were enjoying a mommy-daughter day at her sister’s pool when the unthinkable happened. While in the pool, Tracy suffered from a seizure and blacked out.
When she still hadn’t resurfaced after five minutes, Allison quickly jumped into the water and used her adrenaline to pull her mom to safety. Allison turned Tracy over once they reached the shallow end to keep her head face down on the water.
Allison ran to the house to find her aunt, Tedra Hunt, and told her what happened.
Tedra immediately called 911 before she rushed over to help Tracy. The paramedics arrived shortly and took Tracy to the hospital.
“The doctors explained to us that had Tracy been underwater any longer, she probably wouldn’t be with us right now,” Tedra said. “It is truly amazing that this little girl, who’s actually also pretty small for her age, was able to save my sister.”
When Tracy arrived at the hospital, the doctors were not hopeful because she was unconscious for a long time.
They feared she might not wake up. Or if she did, Tracy will have neurological damage.
To their surprise and relief, Tracy woke up three days later with a clean bill of health. An appointment with a neurologist still needed to be made since she didn’t have a history of seizures.
“Tracy is my sister, best friend, my whole world,” Tedra said. “We lost our dad almost exactly two years ago, and it was so hard to overcome that. I don’t know what I would have done if I lost Tracy that day.”
When she was interviewed, Tracy said she had no memory of what happened.
She only found what exactly happened when she watched the home surveillance video. That’s when she saw how her daughter saved her life.
“She saw that I was in trouble. She saw that I was not OK in the water, and she helped me,” Tracy said. “It’s amazing that she helped me.”
Tedra believed their father was their guardian angel. And he was the one who showed Allison what to do at that time.
“It really captured how heroic that little girl is,” Tedra told TIME. “Everything that happened is a blessing. My sister is alive. Every second mattered. Every second counted.”
Tracy had taught Allison to swim since she was two-and-a-half years old, which turned out to be such a blessing.
“She’s our little mermaid and my little hero,” Tracy said of her daughter.
Since she was still five years old, Allison still doesn’t understand the magnitude of her actions.
Tracy said Allison knew what she did was a good thing. But it’ll probably take her a couple more years before she really understood the importance of what she did.
