Gymnastics is a perilous sport. If this coach hadn’t been paying the utmost attention, his student would have really injured herself.

It’s possible to sustain an injury playing basically any sport. But gymnastics, with its contortions, leaps and complex maneuvers can be especially hazardous.

That’s true even for a skilled gymnast, as this story proves.

Nine-year-old Cherrish Remy has a passion and talent for gymnastics.

She’s been practicing the sport for many years. But one day, she almost caused herself a serious injury.

At a competition in Tennessee, Remy ran up to a springboard at full speed, jumped off it, vaulted into the air, but as she landed, she was off the mark.

She started to fall away from the safety mats. She was going to hit the hard floor.

But then Remy’s coach, Chad Buczek, ran up to her as she was still in the air. The coach grabbed the girl and set her down gently.

The entire room was amazed at Buczek’s quick reflexes. Thanks to him, Remy was completely unharmed.

Justine Remy, Cherrish Remy’s mother, was filming the incident as it played out. She later said the following:

“It was terrifying. I instantly broke out into a sweat.”

Buczek is modest about his heroic actions. He states that this incident wasn’t the first time that he’s caught a child who missed the mark. It also probably won’t be the last.

Despite this incident, Cherrish Remy is still determined to practice gymnastics. One of her role models is the world record-setting gymnast Simone Biles.

Perhaps one day Remy herself will go on to practice gymnastics at an Olympic level? With a coach like Buczek, it’s easy to imagine her going far.

The footage of Remy’s stumble and swift rescue soon made its way online. On YouTube, it went viral. In less than two weeks, one upload has gained over 1.6 million views. It also has more than 32,000 likes and 1,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:

Gymnastics has a high injury rate among sports. In fact, there are almost 100,000 gymnast injuries every single year.

Of course, there are several things that gymnasts can do to prevent the likelihood of receiving an injury (in addition to having a superhero for a coach.) The best things that a gymnast can do to ensure the prevention of injuries are to undergo strength training and to stretch several times a day.

Of course, people who have a desire to perform gymnastics should not be deterred.

It may be a risky sport. But life is all about taking risks. Like most things, if people practice some common-sense safety measures, like those listed above, they can mitigate the chances of experiencing a serious injury. And sometimes, people have to experience a minor injury as part of the learning process.

At the end of the day, living a happy and healthy life is, like gymnastics itself, a balancing act. It’s up to all of us to judge what we can do safely and to look out for others.
