Laid-back Mastiff wins hearts – but not points – at agility competition

Zeus is the champion everyone will remember from the 2014 Rocky Mountain Cluster Dog Show at The National Western Complex in Denver, Colorado.

But he certainly wasn’t the winner.

In fact, the Mastiff’s showing was probably the slowest and least enthusiastic “race” through an obstacle course we’ve ever seen. And that’s precisely what makes it so hilarious.

And we’re not alone – over 4 million people have watched Zeus begrudgingly meander around the course since his video was uploaded to YouTube.

Now, it’s unclear if Zeus has ever been impressive on the agility course, but taking him to a competition would suggest that he’s been known to have some pep in his step.

Alas, today is not the day to show that off. Though let’s be fair, the big ol’ Mastiff knows how to use all the equipment – he just isn’t excited about it.

But his trainer is, which makes it all the more fun to watch as she tries to get Zeus to hurry things along. These competitions are timed after all.

When we first see the pup, he’s deciding whether or not he even wants to partake in the open tunnel. All he has to do is enter from one side and exit out the other.

It’s straightforward, and he does it, he just takes his sweet time coming out the other side. It’s clear that Zeus didn’t come out with godly strength since the filming only begins after someone in the audience realizes they’re seeing an epic fail.

Rather than running to the jump bars – which, to be fair, he does jump over! – he sort of struts over in his own time.

Maybe he’s just figured out that he gets a treat either way and time is a human construct to which he is not bound in any significant way.

His existential crisis is now on full display, so of course humans are taking photos of it.

Rude.

Expecting no better from humanity, the dog now lumbers off to yet another useless task – more jumps. And to his credit, he takes them all.

We were half expecting him to just walk around them without a care in the world.

“That’s great. He’s just showing everyone what “agility” looks like in slow motion. I give him a 10,” said one commenter.

A buzzer goes off when Zeus is a little more than halfway through the course. And if that’s the timer, then he’s totally boned. But he gives it no thought at all.

Like most of us headed to work on a Monday, he’s just there to get through the day, not win any prizes.

Meanwhile, his trainer seems to think if she claps hard enough things will change. But they will not.

He’s not a winner, but he is the hero we all need right now.

“This dog is my new inspiration in life. He’s doing what he can, when he can, the best he can, and not giving two f*cks about what anyone else thinks. And he finished the course.”

Really, though, is this not the secret of life?

The high point (for viewers) comes when Zeus pushes his way through the weave poles. Most dogs miss one because they’re so intent on getting through quickly.

Not this one. He gets them all, meticulously.

After a few more jumps and – dare we say – a trot, Zeus is done and completes the course to a thunderous round of applause.

He is now everyone’s spirit animal, and rightly so.
