4-year-old battling cancer finally gets to hug dad after nearly two months away from each other
The coronavirus pandemic has made things even harder for people battling diseases, particularly cancer. Since they have weakened immune systems, they can’t be exposed to people who can be potential carriers of the virus. This means that they have to be away from other people, including some of their family members.
Mila Sneddon, a 4-year-old girl, has been diagnosed with leukemia.
Because her immune system is compromised, she had to be kept away from her father Scott who works as a service engineer. He went to live with her 16-year-old sister with a family nearby.
Despite being away, Scott never allowed a day to pass by without talking to his sick child.
They would FaceTime every day. They would also see and talk to each other through a window in their back garden.
At first, Mila was confused about the situation.
She would ask her mom Lynda why her dad couldn’t come in and see them. This question broke her mother’s heart a bit more.
Then, there was good news.
Scott found out that he no longer needed to work. He was put on the government furlough scheme which meant that he could finally go home.
However, he wasn’t able to go straight home and see his daughter.
To further ensure his family’s safety, Scott had to put himself on quarantine. He needed to isolate himself for two weeks just to make sure that he won’t show any symptoms of the coronavirus infection.
After isolating himself for 14 days, he was finally allowed to go home.
Scott went to visit Mila. He stood outside their home like what he’s been doing the past couple of weeks. Then, he told his daughter that he’s finally coming home.
Mila was filled with excitement after hearing the news.
She got extra giddy when her father walked through the door. Her face lit up and she beamed with happiness. It was such a heartwarming event!
“Mila leaped on him and wrapped her legs around him like a monkey holding on to him for a long time – she got very emotional and we both had a lump in our throats.”- Lynda shared.
It was a secret.
“We didn’t tell Mila her daddy was coming back to stay, she thought he was just coming to visit through the window as normal but he surprised her and said I can come in.” Lynda said.
Now, Lynda won’t have to be alone in taking care of Mila.
“I have been doing the best I can to keep her entertained and she is missing the “real outside” so it is good that she now has her dad and sister Jodi, 16, to keep her entertained and distract her from everything going on.”
Scott’s homecoming was right on time.
Lynda will be needing extra help once Mila starts her new treatment regime. Having someone to look after her or drive them to the hospital would be great, particularly with the pandemic going on.
She shared:
“She starts a new regime in two weeks which we anticipate she may need to stay in hospital if she becomes unwell during treatment where one of us will have to attend and support her.”
The precious moment was caught on camera and shared with the rest of the world.
