Before long, they were 35,000 feet in the air on their way to Australia. And then something strange happened.

Someone in the middle of the plane stood up and started singing the beat to Stand By Me.

A few nearby passengers looked at him, confused. But then others started singing along.

Then they started snapping their fingers, adding percussion to the beat.

Another passenger started walking from first class into the cabin. He sang the opening lyrics, “When the night has come.”

The passengers started smiling. They realized that they were a part of something special.

They noticed that everyone singing the song was wearing a shirt/hoody that said “The Kingdom Choir.”

People took their phones out and started recording.

Soon, many of the musicians were singing the chorus, and the audience really got into it.

Then one of the singers took the hands of a random passenger and started dancing along with him.

Luckily, a video of this performance then appeared on YouTube. It soon went viral. To date, it has gained over 8.7 million views. It also has more than 138,000 likes.

So what was this performance all about?

The Kingdom Choir was en route to Sydney to perform for the closing ceremony of The Invictus Games.

Non-British people can be forgiven for not knowing what the Invictus Games are exactly.

The Invictus Games are kind of like The Olympics, but the participants are wounded servicemen and servicewomen.

The founder of the event is none other than Prince Harry, who is himself a veteran. The odds are that you’ve heard of him, even if you aren’t British.

The Sydney Invictus Games took place in 2018. Before this event, three other invictus games had been held in London, Orlando and Toronto. The next Invictus Games are due to be held in The Hague in 2022 and in Dusseldorf in 2023.

The Kingdom Choir, who perform in the airplane video, had previously performed during Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle.

During the ceremony, they also performed Stand By Me. Anyone who watched the ceremony may have been wondering why the plane performance seemed so familiar. Well, now you know. The wedding was a pretty big deal, and The Kingdom Choir’s performance stood out. But it’s kind of been overshadowed by all that’s happened since.

Like many musicians, the Kingdom Choir has been affected by coronavirus.

They were barely able to perform in 2020. Luckily, they have scheduled their first performance for 2021, which is set to take place in July. Hopefully, this will be the first step in the choir being able to perform for people on a regular basis again.
