Get your tissues ready because we didn’t need more than one photo and a little background to start tearing up when we heard about this sweet story.

Meet Bart and Babs, two rescues who traveled the mean streets together until they were taken in by Dallas Animal Services.

Babs’ advanced glaucoma rendered her blind.

In fact, the condition was so painful that vets had no choice but to remove her eyes.

Luckily, she had Bart. He had always acted as her eyes and the two were put up for adoption as a bonded pair.

Together forever

The shelter wasn’t aware of how closely bonded the pair were at first, so they put each dog in a separate foster home.

Big mistake.

“When we first rescued them they went into separate foster homes and Babs totally shut down,” Laura Cherry, the pair’s eventual foster mom, told The Dodo. “We decided to bring Bart over to see how she would react, and when he came, she was a totally different dog. It was obvious at that point they are a bonded pair and we have kept them together ever since.”

“Bart supports Babs by guiding her wherever we go,” Cherry said. “She generally stays a step behind him and listens and smells to follow his lead. She has amazing senses and will jump into the car exactly where he does, pick up the tennis ball where he drops it, etc.”

After seeing how much Babs needed Bart, no human would separate them ever again.

Of course, that made adoption difficult.

The long wait

Month after month, volunteers would take Bart and Babs to adoption events. But two big dogs, one of them blind…it was a lot to take on – especially since Babs is the one with all the energy!

The responsibility was too much, it seemed, for anyone in the local area. So the pair spent about a year waiting for their forever home.

And they had no idea how far they’d go to find it.

Big sky country

Finally, the good news came. A man named Jay had been told about the pair and wanted to adopt them.

Sadly, Jay had lost 2 dogs the previous year to cancer. But his sister heard about Bart & Babs in the UK’s Daily Mail and told her brother to take a look. He was retired and wanted two dogs – and he had the time and resources to care for them.

The only issue was that Jay lived in Montana.

Luckily, the shelter had a volunteer who lived near Jay and completed a home visit, deciding it would be a great place for the dogs to live out their days.

Then, Jay drove all the way down the country to get Bart and Babs.

The shelter posted the good news in July of 2017:

“There was an instant connection between Babs & Bart and Jay. Babs tended to be shy when she met new people, but was immediately loving on him, as was Bart. 🙂 Babs & Bart made sure Jay knew they loved to be petted. It was truly LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT & TOUCH. An overnight bag was packed with all of their favorite things especially the alligator squeaky. It’s Bart’s favorite. With a kiss on their heads, they headed home. Finally.”

Until death do us part

Unfortunately, Bart passed away last year.

“He had been fighting cancer for a while and it was time. His adopter thought everyone should know since so many knew them. Their dad is still trying to heal, understandably. Bart was Babs’ eyes,” the shelter reported.

We have no doubt life is not the same for Babs, but luckily Jay adopted another German Shepard to be Babs’ helper when Bart’s time was coming to an end.
