Brother and sister dogs who were tossed away by their “owner” got a happy ending recently in San Diego.

Star and Denver were dumped along with their 6 Terrier mix siblings and their mother in rural Louisiana a few months ago. But lucky for them, a compassionate family happened upon them just in time and gave them a second chance at life.

The family decided to adopt the mother dog and took the puppies to a local shelter so they could be adopted as well. Sadly, the shelter was already overburdened with puppies, but they temporarily took them all in.

That’s when they called for help from some of their partner shelters around the country, and one answered the call – The Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego.

Not only did the Center arrange to have the entire litter transported 1,900 miles across the country a few weeks ago, but they also took in 31 other dogs from the Louisiana shelter to lessen the caretakers’ burden.

That’s some serious teamwork!

When the animals arrived, the staff at the Woodward center noticed that one of the Terrier pups was deaf and almost entirely blind. The little female, named Star, was still successfully navigating the world but was often left out of playtime with other dogs. Unless, of course, her favorite brother was around.

Lucky for her, it turns out she had a friend and protector in her brother Denver.

While the rest of the litter played, Denver always checked on Star and would run over to her and see if she was ok, even playing with her separately.

That’s when the staff realized that the two would need to be adopted together.

Denver was basically acting as Star’s guide dog, leading her around and making time to engage with her.

“Her brother Denver really stuck by her side,” Jessica Gercke, spokesperson for the Center, told CBS8 News. “Even though there were eight of them Denver was really sticking near her, guiding her around. She was depending on him.”

In late February, the Center announced that they would go up for adoption and people from around the country offered to take the brother and sister pups in. However, Denver suffered a bee sting right before the adoption event and they had to be held back a bit longer until he recovered.

That’s when their story really started to go viral, and the Center was flooded with calls from other countries as well.

“These puppies have gone beyond anything we’ve seen so far,” said Gercke. “We got a call the other day, someone asked if they could ship them overseas, which of course we won’t. We’re going to keep them as long as we need to, to make sure they’re together.”

With so many local offers to assess, the Center spent some time finding just the right home for the pair. And on March 11th, they took to Facebook to announce that Denver and Star were off to their forever home!

“We are thrilled to share with you that our famous puppy pair, Star and Denver, have found the perfect forever home! Watch as their new parents discover that their adoption fees have been fully sponsored by a generous donor. Star and Denver have started their new life in Encinitas with their devoted mom and dad,” the post read.

Before their adoption, the sweet brother and sister puppies had made quite an impression on the staff. So much so that they decided to throw them a going away party and take the opportunity to say goodbye – a sweet gesture for everyone involved.

And the pair look lucky to have their loving new parents!
