Carrie Underwood and her son sing an adorably angelic version of “The Little Drummer Boy”

“The Little Drummer Boy” is a Christmastime favorite for holiday-lovers young and old.

It was written by American composer and teacher Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941. However, it didn’t start to become part of the holiday canon until a decade later.

A Christmas classic

While it was based on a traditional Czech song, it quickly became a standard around the world. Since it’s first recording, it’s been covered by everyone from Bing Crosby to Justin Bieber.

And while you might think no one needs another holiday album, we have no doubt that country superstar Carrie Underwood’s 2020 release is going to excite plenty of people. On it, she sings “The Little Drummer Boy” with a special guest – her son Isaiah.

A new spin

The duet with her 5-year-old is one of 11 songs on the album My Gift from the 37-year-old former American Idol winner. (For those looking for a more sultry duet, John Legend is on there too!)

“[Isaiah] loves to sing. He loves music. He definitely has that passion and I asked him, ‘Would you ever want to go in and sing with Mommy?’ He said, ‘Yes,’” Underwood told the Associated Press.

Underwood has another son, Jacob, with husband Mike Fisher but at just a year old he’ll have to wait for his musical debut.

The country singer is thrilled with the way the album turned out but wasn’t entirely sure working with a 5-year-old in the studio would be a great idea. In the end, she said, “he went in and he did such a great job.”

“He was throwing his hands up in the air and was so excited and had all these cute 5-year-old emotions just pouring out of him,” she told the AP.

Her own “Little Drummer Boy”

The song “The Little Drummer Boy” has always reminded her of her own little boy, she told PEOPLE.

“Whenever I think of that song, I picture his face and his personality. That is so him,” she told hosts Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin. “He would be the kid that would make you something and bring it to you because that’s what he had to give you. And that’s the whole sentiment behind ‘Little Drummer Boy’ is bringing what he has to Jesus…”

The mother-son project was “just such a proud moment for me as a mom,” she said.

Despite 2020 being a hard year for nearly everyone, Underwood was dedicated to soldiering on with the new album.

“I didn’t want to let this year stop us,” she said. “We made this album and to be honest, it was such a blessing for me to be able to go in and sing these happy, positive songs this year. It was something I needed.”

She announced her first-ever Christmas album as well as its tracklist in an Instagram post last month.

My Gift will, of course, contain some holiday classics like “Silent Night” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” but some of the 11 tracks will be original tunes.

“The songs on #MyGift are a mix of Christmas classics that are close to my heart and new songs that I hope will become close to yours,” she wrote in her Instagram post. “The album also includes a couple of very special guests…I can’t wait for you all to hear ‘Hallelujah’ written by and sung with the incredible @JohnLegend. … September 25 can’t come soon enough! #MyGift
