Teen cashier pays for officer’s brownie, but angry couple who witnessed it try to get him fired

Sometimes, an act of kindness can make a huge impact on someone’s life, but they also say that no good deed goes unpunished. How weird and unfair it may sound, this teen cashier can definitely relate to that statement.

The 18-year-old cashier Zach Randolph almost got fired after he decided to pay for a police officer’s brownie out of his own pocket.

All of this occurred back in 2017, but the story recently went viral on social media. It all started at a Great American Cookies stand somewhere in Texas, when a police officer approached to stand for a donut. When the officer noticed that he didn’t have his wallet with him, Zach simply decided to give the officer a brownie and pay it from his own wage. It was only a $2,75 brownie, but that one brownie ended up giving Zach a big headache.

It turns out that an angry customer couple who witnessed this act of kindness became very upset about the whole situation and even brought it up to upper management.

After the ‘incident’, the management decided to put the young man on temporary leave, and he nearly got fired as well. Apparently, the couple that complained said that Zach was acting racist “because he didn’t offer to pay for our cookies” as well. Reportedly, one of the customers even wanted to escalate the ridiculous situation physically.

Zach’s mom was absolutely enraged when she heard what happened, and decided to publish a heartfelt Facebook post.

“Since when does buying a police officer a cookie give anyone else a reason to attack someone. And when did a Corporation want to FIRE someone for being KIND, taking what a customer said or did, regardless of how hateful they are,” she posted.

“(The warning) says “he bought a cookie for a police officer and a customer wanted to physically fight him” it does state if this happens again he will be terminated.”

To Zach, gifting this police officer a simple brownie was the most normal thing in the world. He definitely didn’t see anything bad or troubling about it.

Zach has always been very kind and treats members of his community with the utmost respect, and he figured it would just be a kind gesture and a cool ‘thank you’ for the police officer’s surface.

“He’s just a really nice guy and on top of that he has a badge. That’s enough for me to buy him something. That’s the least I can do,” the young man later said to FOX26 News. “A lot of people I know my age don’t support police officers. I don’t think it’s fair.”

Little did he know that his act of kindness at the Katy Mills Mall would end up giving him so much trouble.

Things took a turn for the worse when the family kept asking for their free cookies as if they were entitled to get them. When Zach declined, the customers started getting furious and physically threatened him.

“They were asking if I was going to buy them a cookie. And I told them both, ‘No. They don’t have a badge. I’m sorry, “‘ Zach explained to Click2Houston.

“This customer started verbally attacking him, calling my son a racist, and threatened to beat him up. His wife threatened to go back there and slap him,” mom added. “The middle aged man sat down his little daughter and tried to come behind the counter to attack him. Thankfully his coworker defused the situation. The man then said ‘I will get you fired’”

Before things started to get worse, Zach made the right call and removed himself from the situation.

The next day, Zach was told by management that he should be fired. Luckily, his manager realized how idiotic that would be, and settled on a suspension of a week to keep both parties happy. Nonetheless, Zach’s mom was still furious, and rightfully so.

After the story went viral and made rounds on the local news, the franchise owner decided to release an apology statement.

“On behalf of Great American Cookies Katy Mills, we owe the employee an apology. It was never an issue that he purchased a brownie for a police officer, but rather the events that unfolded with another customer in line at the time. However, after further review, we realize that the employee was in fact in the right and we continue to reach out to him and his mom to issue an apology. The corrective action and suspension was reversed immediately and we hope to connect with him today.”

Zach got his job back and was paid for the time he was suspended. The police department also wanted to meet him, so that’s exactly what happened.
