Senior gets job delivering packages but doesn’t know homeowner’s been recording him struggling

There are a lot of people that believe that even the smallest thing happens for a reason, and perhaps this is one of those things. When a homeowner noticed how a delivery man struggled to put all her groceries at the front door, she couldn’t help but feel guilty about the whole thing. She decided to track this elderly man down to surprise him with an absolutely amazing and kind gift.

Because of the pandemic, Jennifer Weiss who lives in Ogden Country, Utah, switched to online grocery shopping.

You can order pretty much everything online nowadays, and for groceries, you’ll usually have them at your doorstep within 24 hours. In the middle of a deadly pandemic, it’s probably the safest way to shop until things get better.

Shopping online is something that Jennifer does often, but this delivery was definitely different. When she noticed how the courier, an elderly man, was struggling to bring all of her groceries to the doorstep, she felt a little bit guilty.

Jennifer has a smart doorbell camera, and the delivery man didn’t realize that she could see him struggling.

The homeowner gets a notification via her smartphone whenever someone rings the doorbell, which is why she noticed the delivery man in the first place. Even though the man was noticeably struggling to get all of the items up the steps, he handled the entire order with the utmost care. The delivery man was later identified as Larry.

“It made me kind of feel guilty, to have someone else deliver stuff, just cuz’ I didn’t want to go to the store,” Jennifer said to ABC4 News.

The homeowner didn’t want to just sit by, and she decided to track the man down so she could thank him in person.

She went on the local Ogden, Utah Facebook page to help identify him.

“Ogden, I need your help in identifying this man. He did nothing wrong-in fact, just the opposite. He delivered a fairly small grocery order of mine from Walmart today and had a difficult time getting up and down my stairs (I only know this from watching my doorbell camera afterward). He took such care with all of my bags even though he clearly had some mobility difficulties. My heart broke seeing this.”

The post was widely seen, and one of Larry’s relatives actually got in touch with her.

Even though Larry wasn’t in great physical shape for the job, he simply needed the extra money the job provided. You see, a swamp cooler recently blew off the man’s roof. While he did tape it up a bit, he needed money to fix that issue permanently. Delivering packages was the only way he could get enough money for the repairs.

To make matters worse, Larry was actually recovering from a stroke, and doing heavy physical work would be frowned upon by his doctors.

As soon as Jennifer heard about Larry’s story, she decided to collect some funds to fix his house. People who saw the Facebook post also started chipping in.

Larry’s Venmo-account was being flooded with small donations, and he had the required amount of money to fix his cooler quite soon.

Now that he had too much, he didn’t have to continue his taxing delivery job anymore. Furthermore, he decided to pay the kindness forward.

“I was just trying to get them to donate to the food banks or toys for tots, instead of giving me money,” Larry said.

“It may seem so small, it may seem like it couldn’t amount to much, but you just never know when it could cause a snowball effect, a huge chain reaction, it could really make someone’s day, their life, it could be the positive that they need,” Jennifer added.

This really shows just shows how one act of kindness can make such a huge difference.
