Woman shows how to make gorgeous snowflake decoration using only plastic hangers and zip ties
Should you go out and buy a bunch of new plastic just to make this decoration? No.
But can you repurpose those extra hangers you already have to make a more sustainable Christmas decoration that costs you nothing but a bit of time? You bet!
If you’re thinking that anything made with a bunch of cheap hangers is going to look tacky, we understand. But we have to admit that we were surprised at just how lovely the final product is. It’s simple, festive, and classic – and it’s not shedding glitter all over the place!
The idea comes from Jeanne Cherry at the YouTube channel “juNxtaposition” who decribed how to upcycle the plastic menaces into delicate snowflakes using just 16 hangers and a package of zip ties. The only “rule” is that all 16 hangers need to be the same shape and size.
If you want a small snowflake, you can repurpose some baby hangers.
Here’s how to get started on your craft project:
First, find an open spot on the floor or a table to spread out your materials. The floor actually works best in this case so you can stand up and look at your work as you go.
Next, you’ll start to piece together your snowflake by laying down the first two hangers, bottom to bottom.
Now do that three more times to create a total of four pairs.
Arrange the pairs so the hanger hooks are touching, like this:
There’s no need to worry about your zip ties yet because before you do anything with them you’re going to make another layer of hangers using the same method.
However, with this layer, you’re going to want to lay each pair so they are in between the pairs from the bottom layer. Once again, you’ll use 4 pairs, for 8 total hangers.
Now you could be able to step back and see your snowflake.
Once you’re satisfied, it’s time to break out the zip ties.
You’ll start with the hanger hooks from the bottom layer, fastening a zip tie around each pair and catching the hanger edges above at the same time. (The video down below will take you through the process in detail.)
One thing to keep in mind is that you don’t want to tie your zip ties too tight at the start. Leaving yourself some wiggle room will help you make any last-minute adjustments before you tighten things up and finish it off at the end.
Next, you’ll begin fastening the inner circle edges together in groups of four (again, not too tight).
When you’re done, give it one more good look to make sure things are where they need to be and – when you’re satisfied – begin to tighten all the zip ties.
You’ll be left with a beautiful snowflake with zip tie ends handing off of it, which you simply need to snip off at the end.
Your unadorned snowflake likely looks beautiful the way it is or you may feel the urge to add some flair – it’s up to you.
