Teen’s waiting for delayed train – then a cop give her a ride out of town

The world is filled with some pretty amazing people. They are all around us. It is very easy not to notice them around, but they’re usually the first ones to come to the rescue for someone in need.

Kori Malenfant and her parents were in New York for an important surgery when they get to witness one of these amazing human beings firsthand.

Chiari malformation is a condition where a person’s brain extends into their spinal cord. Malenfant is suffering from this condition and was due for surgery. The family would need to travel from their home in Maine all the way to Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

On their way home, the weather just did not cooperate. As they got to the train station, they already missed their Amtrak train going home. Now they had to wait for another 2 1/2 hours for the next. Fresh out of surgery, Malenfant had no place warm and comfortable to rest at the train station.

Her mother was desperate so she approached two Boston police officers. She asked them if there was anywhere they could store their luggage while they find someplace warm to rest.

Malenfant recalled the situation in a Facebook post, “The officers quickly assured Mom that they would help us by contacting their captain to see what he could do. Shortly after, the Boston police captain came to us and asked us to follow him.”

The officer led the way and loaded their luggage into his unmarked police SUV.

“He pulled into the police station, got gas, and quickly started heading North. We were all pretty confused at this point, and assumed he was going to ride us around a little bit to warm us up.”

They had no idea what he had in mind. Instead of driving them someplace warm, he had decided to give them a surprise.

“After quite some time, as we continued moving North, Mom asked where we were going, and he laughed and said he was kidnapping us and that it was perfectly legal. We soon realized he was driving us all the way to Portland, back to our car!”

In case you didn’t know, Google Maps says, a typical ride from New York to Portland is about 5 1/2 hours long. Clearly, this was definitely going above and beyond.

“He said there was no way he was going to allow me to sit in the cold so soon after surgery and that it was his pleasure to drive us. We were all in shock and very emotional at this amazing and generous act of kindness.”

They spent the long ride getting to know more about each other. It turns out, Captain Kelley McCormick, was one of the main commanders in charge during the Boston Marathon bombing and the manhunt that followed.

“He is a humble, inspiring, kind man. I am blessed and honored to have spent a car ride with such an amazing national hero,” she wrote.
