Room fills with laughter when couple is given random song to dance to – and it's 'Bare Necessities'
“Oh, they’re feeling adventurous,” the host of the Strictly Open finals said as he walked out onto the dancefloor with Laszlo Tarkanyi and Stefanie Tschom, the couple who was next to perform in the competition.
“How adventurous? I’m going to say 10, by saying ‘adventurous’ you’ve pushed it to the max,” he continued with a laugh while audience members also called out with excitement.
Even though the host was poking fun from the very beginning, the two dancers seemed to be calm, cool and collected.
Basically what happens is that the man and woman have no idea which song they are about to dance to. It is only given to them once they take the stage, so they can’t prepare that much — it is a lot of improvisation. Also, the DJs tend to choose some pretty off-kilter cuts.
“We’ll pray for you,” the host says. “The DJs are calculating their most evil plan they have ever calculated in the history of adventure.”
Then before they know it, they are given a song that is actually very lovely… Or so it seems like. It is a slow, whimsical song and the pair uses the moment to spin around, keeping it simple yet elegant.
But then, right when they think they have gotten lucky with a good song choice, it completely switches gears and turns into “Bare Necessities” from Disney’s The Jungle Book. The song is performed by Phil Harris and Bruce Reitherman.
All of their competitors who are watching break out into laughter and honestly, so do Tarkanyi and Tschom, as they are clearly thrown off by surprise.
While the song is no longer ideal, they handle the change with grace and actually seem to have no problem finding their rhythm again. Laszlo spins Stefanie around what feels like a hundred times and they each throw in some intricate — somehow synchronized — footwork. It really takes true connection and chemistry with your dance partner to pull this competition off!
There are even some humorous moments when Laszlo tries to lift his foot up and over Stefanie, but then there’s a little bit hesitation and they reverse backward. Is it intentional? We’re not sure, but it seems quite funny and also earned some good laughs from the crowd! Overall, it seemed like a graceful dance routine that offered a hint of playfulness and we are into it.
Their west coast swing-style dancing was so much fun and strangely fit the song just right.
At the beginning of their dance, the couple said they were feeling adventurous and we definitely think they stuck to that. They were given a challenging song but welcomed it with open arms… But most importantly, they seemed to truly enjoy themselves.
Actually, even more importantly — they won first place in the Strictly Open final! And after watching the video for yourself, you will totally understand why.
Their performance is fun, effortless and breezy. Watch the whole thing for yourself below.
