Daughter serenades dying mom and moves millions to tears

Kayla George was just 12 years old when she went viral for a heartfelt but devastating moment with her mother Anne George.

Anne was diagnosed with cancer and in 2017 it got to the point where she needed to be hospitalized long-term at the Marie Curie Hospice in Glasgow, Scotland.

In fact, the 47-year-old mom had battled cancer three times up until that point and was given just weeks to live after a tumor in her back began to spread.

It all began when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma 16 years prior. After going into remission, she then developed breast cancer, but her treatment seemed to help her beat it. Sadly, a follow-up CT scan revealed the tumor had spread to her back.

While some sources identify the woman videotaping the event as Kayla’s aunt, Rosalind Reilly’s own video caption states that she’s the young girl’s godmother (though it appears she could be both). She was visiting Anne in August 2017 with Kayla present and when the young girl started to sing to her mother she believed it was a moment worth preserving for posterity.

Since she uploaded the tender moment, it’s been viewed 2.6 million times and touched hearts around the world – and brought more than a few tears to peoples’ eyes.

Kayla’s song choice? Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years,” a song that became famous from the Twilight soundtrack. While the song is about the love affair between the two main characters, lyrics like “…don’t be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years, I’ll love you for a thousand more” take on a whole new meaning in Kayla’s context.

According to the Daily Record, Reilly said that singing has always been important to Kayla and she had even tried out for the reality talent competition Britain’s Got Talent a few times.

“She has sung quite a lot for her mum in the past and she’ll sing for the family and stuff like that. But this was completely out of the blue. She must have had the music on her phone and she just started singing.”

Reilly said her caring gesture was no surprise since the girl had always been very thoughtful towards her mother.

Kayla’s tragic situation was compounded by the fact that she lived with her mother and would need to move in with her father and other relatives now that her mom could no longer care for her.

“It’s just Kayla and her mum who live together, which is going to make it harder for her when her mum’s not here,” Reilly said.

While the young girl’s caretakers were working hard to keep her in her regular school, she shuttled between her father’s, Reilly’s, and her grandmother’s homes. Kayla’s father lives the farthest from the school but he was doing his best to find a more suitable home.

“He has to get two buses at the moment to take her to school. It’s imperative that he gets a house in the east end. She’s at St Andrew’s and she needs to stay there. Her friends are here and her life is here,” Reilly said.

Kayla’s friends tried to set up a GoFundMe for her, but it didn’t raise enough money for a move. An October 2017 fundraiser held by friends of Anne George raised money for the young girl to get a camera and a photography apprenticeship so she could pursue another one of her passions.

Anne George passed away prior to the fundraiser.

One year ago, Reilly updated viewers in a comment on the video:

“Hi everyone this is just an update to let everyone know that unfortunately Anne passed away. She had a hard, long battle with cancer but never gave up fighting. Kayla continues to sing and no doubt has made her mum so proud. Thank you so much for your messages it really means the world.”
