“Kitten Rescue volunteers place over 1,000 cats and kittens into homes every year. Since we began, we have rescued and placed over 21,000 cats (and counting!) into loving homes,” their website reads.
Adorable litter of kittens with deformed legs get teeny-tiny casts to straighten them
Kitten Rescue is a non-profit animal organization that operates in Los Angeles, and they’ve certainly helped out plenty of stray cats and their kittens in the area. This rescue, however, was a little bit more unique. They heard about a litter of six adorable kittens which were only a couple of weeks old, but something seemed wrong.
The front legs on all of the six furry siblings looked deformed, they were crooked and the joints were bending in ways they aren’t supposed to.
The six baby cats were actually brought info from the East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys and the shelter staff estimated that they were approximately three weeks old. When they arrived at Kitten Rescue, the folks over there decided to give all of them a fun name.
Meet Pinot, Merlot, Burgundy, Cabernet, Chianti, and Malbec! These six are so adorable on their own, but the whole litter together is simply an overload of cuteness. Vets believe they’re suffering from a rare genetic condition that causes the deformity on their legs, but the six seem in perfect health otherwise, thankfully.
And in case you haven’t noticed – this litter is most definitely named after wine varieties!
“Live from our Nursery! We can’t get over how sweet this litter of 6 is 💕 Their names are Merlot, Pinot, Cabernet, Burgundy, Chianti, and Malbec, for all the wine lovers out there 😉🍷” the animal organization posted on Facebook along with an adorable picture of the six little furballs.
Since they’re named after the varieties of wine, these six cute baby cats are now more commonly referred to as “The Wine Kitties”. What a cool nickname for this adorable six-pack!
The animal organizations decided to step in before things started to get worse since these deformed joints could give them severe issues later on in life.
They got in touch with the ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital and specifically requested assistance from their joint and bone specialists. The first step was to find out what was actually wrong, and the doctors diagnosed these six baby cats with carpal laxity syndrome. Strangely enough, this syndrome is mainly present in younger dogs, but it appears that felines can suffer from it as well.
It’s unclear just how these six kittens got the genetic disorder, but it’s clear that the growth rates of the bones and the tendons weren’t in balance – causing their front paws to be crooked.
Luckily, the doctors were able to give the Wine Kitties some casts that should fully correct the deformation.
Even though they expect that Pinot, Merlot, Burgundy, Cabernet, Chianti, and Malbec will fully recover, so to speak, they’ll still need a whole bunch of check-ups to make sure that the development and growth of their joints and bones are going in the right direction.
“Each kitten in this litter is exceptionally sweet and affectionate, and we want to make sure they’re given a chance to grow up healthy, happy, and strong,” Kitten Rescue posted on their Facebook page.
The animal organization is taking care of the financial aspect since the molds and veterinarians aren’t quite costly, but they count on the donations of generous people and volunteers to keep them going. When these kittens are fully healed, they’ll do their absolute best to find them a loving forever home.
