“He is so sweet and both of them were so tired after playing yesterday,” Holmes said. “It made me happy to see them so happy. Just neighbors being neighborly.”
It’s always a bit strange if there are new neighbors, as you never really know what to expect and how well you’ll get along. It also turns out that some are just eagerly curious to go and meet the new residents, which is something that definitely applies to this adorable four-footer.
The adorable pup is named Bailey, and she is actually a rescue dog. She was found back in 2017 in the midst of Hurricane Harvey and was then sent to a foster family. They absolutely loved her so much and it didn’t take long before they decided to take her permanently.
The foster family already had another four-footer running around, but Bailey and her sibling got along wonderfully. They definitely liked each other and played around all day, going on doggie adventures together. Bailey also loved to run around on her own, which was something that she often did in the large backyard.
The new dog, named Shep, could often be found playing in the backyard as well, and it didn’t really take long before Bailey realized that there was a new four-footer in the neighborhood. Bailey’s mom Tessa Llewellyn Holmes still recalls how and when it all started.
“They first really started noticing each other around May,” the woman told The Dodo. “It started with some digging, and I noticed they had each dug low enough to touch noses under the fence. They’d also run [along] the fence together when they were both outside. It was playful and fun.”
“You could tell they wanted to meet,” Bailey’s owner said. “Bailey is very athletic and has also learned to jump into my 4-foot-high raised flower bed and peek over the fence at him.”
At one point, both dogs were playing on their respective sides on the fence – but then Bailey realized that some of the boards that were keeping them separated were a bit loose. After a couple of minutes of pulling and pushing, Bailey managed to break through and say hello to Shep at last!
Bailey’s mom first realized that Shep was in their backyard because his collar sounded different.
“We actually didn’t notice him in the backyard because I had the curtains closed. I heard a jingle that sounded different from Bailey’s collar so I looked outside and was surprised to see him.”
These two definitely get along and are already the best of friends! The pooches were running around together in the backyards for three hours. Bailey’s mom then figured that Shep would need to head back home again, but these two friends weren’t ready to leave each other just yet.
“I tried to put Shep back in his yard and prop the boards back up by leaning a big log against it, but he was back within five minutes.”
Because these two pups adore each other so much, the two families are hoping to get them together quite often to play around. And who knows, maybe they’ll even let a hole in the fence.
“He is so sweet and both of them were so tired after playing yesterday,” Holmes said. “It made me happy to see them so happy. Just neighbors being neighborly.”
