Sweet dog who’s been in the shelter since 2018 finally finds forever home

After 866 days in a Delaware SPCA, Charlize must have wondered if she would ever find a forever home. She is a 4-year old mixed breed that had been at the shelter since the summer of 2018.

Charlize was transferred to the Delaware SPCA after having spent 5 months at another agency.

In total, Charlize has spent 990 days in shelters.

She had to be patient but eventually, the perfect new family was found for her.

A young couple named Anna and Matthew had just purchased a home together.

It is a big step in any couple’s journey but there was one addition they needed to make to the house before it could be called a home. They needed a dog. They needed a 4-legged companion to share their lives with.

Anna and Matthew didn’t choose Charlize out of pity that she had been in the shelter so long, however. They noted that they chose Charlize because of her smiling face and her friendly disposition.

They also noticed that she’s a pretty cute lady as well.

Charlize enjoys both indoor and outdoor activities much like Anna and Matthew do, adding to the compatibility shared between the three.

“We weren’t aware of how long she had been in the shelter until we met her and honestly couldn’t figure it out,” said Anna. “She was such a sweetie the whole time we were there meeting her! And now, seeing how excited she is to be home and with people loving her makes us so happy!”

The couple adopted her on November 13th and say she is fitting in just fine. In fact, they say she’s already sharing the bed with Mommy and Daddy. It’s a great new beginning for Charlize and a great new beginning for Anna and Matthew as well.

“I am happy that she seems to trust us already,” Anna said. “It’s like we have known her much longer than we have.”

The Delaware SPCA has said that Charlize was the longest staying resident they’ve ever had in their shelters.

Looking at photos of this smiling, happy, dog and it becomes almost impossible to figure out why she went unadopted for as long as she did. It just goes to show that the world needs as many kind and caring animal-lovers as possible.

Staff from the Delaware SPCA enjoy posting to Facebook every Friday to talk about their recently adopted pets. They gave Charlize a special shout out when they got to announce that she’d been adopted, however.

It’s pretty clear Charlize touched the hearts of the staff there as well.

“We have been very been busy placing our dogs and cats into loving forever homes!” the SPCA’s Facebook post reads. “While we’re always excited for all our families and lucky animals, we are especially thrilled for our longest resident dog, Charlize, who, after 866 days with us, was adopted today and will spend the holidays with a family of her very own!”

“Happy tails to Charlize, her new family, and ALL our adopters and lucky animals!”
