This year’s graduating high school students have had to go through so much hardship. Yet they keep on thriving regardless.
No one should ever call young people lazy again. Many of them are working at their educations, careers, and lives in a very difficult time. They aren’t just rising to the challenge but excelling at it.
The perfect example of a young person who is surmounting the challenges of today is Peyton Manker.
She lives in Illinois. Her final year of high school is now over. Despite the extreme challenges of social distancing, Manker studied hard.
Usually, high school students are able to enjoy the summer after senior year by hanging out with friends one last time before life takes them down different avenues.
But thanks to the US’s terrible coronavirus response, Manker and millions of others have had to remain apart from their friends.
Instead of having an in-person graduation ceremony, Manker had to have one online. The kids then learned that their prom was canceled.
Of course, it seems cruel to deprive kids of a traditional prom. But they understood that it was for the greater good. Instead of focusing on how she was missing out, Manker decided to make a statement.
She heard about Duck Brand Duct Tape’s yearly competition for students to make prom dresses and tuxes out of duct tape and got creative.
Over the next few weeks, she got to work on a blue dress with a gold trim. It would also have many unique touches.
400 hours later, Manker unveiled her dress to the world. It fit her perfectly. But most impressively, it was filled with clever statements about the coronavirus crisis.
On one part of the dress’s skirt was a group of people running away from a gigantic germ, representing people trying to get away from the virus.
Another part of the skirt showed a range of essential workers all wearing masks.
On another part of the skirt was a representation of Manker’s virtual graduation ceremony, which looks familiar to all of this year’s graduating students.
The skirt also included a person sneezing into their elbow. There was also a man with a confused thought bubble, which represented mental health during coronavirus.
In addition to the dress, Manker also made a range of duct tape accessories, such as a corsage, earrings, a necklace, a handbag and, naturally, a face mask.
The face mask contained the all-important phrase, “Flatten the curve!”
The dress both looks amazing and sends out a very powerful message! But will this be enough for Manker to win Duck Tape’s competition?
The winners will be announced on July 21st. If Manker wins the top prize, she’ll recieve a $10,000 scholarship. Alternatively, she could become one of four runners up, who will each receive $500.
But of course, even if Manker doesn’t win this particular competition, she has still achieved something incredible. How many people are able to create something like her dress?
Manker has not decided on the career path that she ultimately wants to follow. But her creative skills are sure to take her far.
