Adorably protective golden retriever won't let his dad lay a finger on mom
Golden Retrievers aren’t exactly most people’s first choice for a guard dog. The breed is quite timid and friendly. In fact, you could say they’re a little too friendly.
It’s been joked in the past that if a retriever ever saw an intruder, they’d show the intruder where the money or loot was. That may mostly a joke, but it’s not far from the truth.
Yeah, you may rarely see retrievers being protective or scary. But this one here is awfully protective of his mom.
Bailey the golden retriever has a YouTube channel all about him. His parents take him everywhere, and he’s a bit of a celebrity.
This big, silly boy is happy to let mom play with his ears or share a bed with him. That’s just what retrievers are like. Eager to please, and very slow to get angry.
But Bailey here has bit less patience than most retrievers. When dad seems to be “picking on” mom, Bailey isn’t having any of it.
Dad started slow by poking mom’s leg with some fingers, and Bailey watched for a bit to see how far it’d go.
Well, it went further. Bailey didn’t like that one bit, so he gave dad a friendly nudge away.
Of course, mom finds the whole sight hilarious.
Now that they know they got a reaction out of Bailey, it’s time to see what the boundaries are that Bailey put in place.
Instead of poking or sliding a few fingers, dad is now placing his entire hand on mom. That’s a lot more physical than before, and now alarms are sounding in the retriever’s head.
Instead of a nudge, he’s now barking and reaching over slightly. Hey, hands off!
Retrievers aren’t exactly ones to bite, but maybe Bailey is willing to make an exception?
Dad has now moved to another side of the bed, and Bailey has put himself between him and mom.
Retrievers have been described as being “completely devoid of guarding instincts.” Well, not completely as shown by Bailey.
But even Bailey, who’s on the more protective side for a retriever, still can’t bring himself to bite anyone.
All he does is make some soft growls and warning barks, but he’s yet to sink his teeth into anything.
I don’t think he could, frankly.
Bailey now lays flat, prostrated on the bed with his tail wagging. And even now, he still isn’t letting any hands get on his mom.
Does he realize his mom is someone’s wife? No? Didn’t think so.
Golden retrievers are more at home playing around water or chasing waterfowl. Though Bailey shows that some of them can still bring out a big of a guard dog in them.
Still, I’d recommend a German shepherd or something else for a guard dog. The expression “all bark, no bite” might have a rather literal meaning with a Golden retriever.
