It may seem like common sense and courtesy to always give priority to the pregnant and elderly, but alas, some folks seem to have missed the memo.

Public places are a ripe opportunity to see who learned their manners and who didn’t. This brings us to this scene from Hegang, in Northeastern China.

Here for an appointment is a pregnant wife and her husband, and seemingly no place to sit and rest. Lining the benches are other people, who clearly aren’t pregnant or elderly. So the expectant mother, who’s very clearly far into her pregnancy, is forced to stand.

It’s hard to tell how much time passes in the video, but it doesn’t matter. Whether it was just 1 minute, or if it was 20 minutes, a pregnant woman should not have to wait for someone to lend her their seat.

Watching all of this transpire really brings just one word to mind : shameful.

There’s about 3-4 people on that bench, and none of them so much as budge or reconsider. If you’re watching the video version of this story, it’s also worth noting that it’s been sped up. If it seems like she was waiting for a long while in that video, then bear in mind that the actual scene must have been even longer.

Without anyone willing to give up their seat, this mother seems forced to stay standing for however long until her appointment. Really, guys?

Come on, I don’t think the business you’re attending to on your phone is that important. Unless all 4 of these people are in this hospital because they have broken legs and can’t stand, then there’s no excuse.

In fact, this scene just upsets even more with every repeated viewing.

One pregnant woman, four people on a bench, and not a single one so much as lifts their eyes from their phones.

Her husband is tired of what he’s seeing, and takes matters into his own hands. His wife needs a place to sit, and he’ll make sure she finds one no matter what it takes.

“Being a human chair for your spouse should they ever need it” might not be in those marriage vows, but with what marriage signs you up for, you might have to do it at one point or another.

He gestures to her, letting her know what his idea is. Then, he promptly kneels down and lets her sit on his back.

Of course, it’s sad that it had to come that far. No doubt about that. Though another thing that we shouldn’t doubt is the love this man has for his wife.

The slight discomfort he might feel from a grown person using him as a chair? That’s nothing compared to what a pregnant and expecting mom has to put up with. If she can carry a child for 9 months, then carrying her weight on his shoulders is the least he can do in return.

And it’s a heartwarming, even if a bit bittersweet, sight to see. In sickness and in health, till death do us part. With a bond this strong, their marriage can handle anything.

Wherever this husband is now, he should know how much admiration and respect he got from the internet. His wife can rest easy at night, knowing how far her man will go for her.
