Military dog joyfully reunites with handler after a year of being apart

A military dog is a good addition to the military force because they play an important role in military operations and missions.

They use their impeccable sense of smell to locate enemies, explosive devices, contraband, and even injured soldiers.

These dogs undergo intensive training under the supervision of a handler, who oftentimes is going to be their human partner once they get deployed into action.

However, this task becomes hard for those handlers who naturally love dogs.

After months to years of training and being together, creating a wonderful relationship beyond their sworn duty isn’t impossible.

That’s where the sorrow comes in, knowing the process within the military force, there will come a time when the soldier gets deployed to a different area.

It’s an inevitable part of both the military dog’s and his partner’s duty.

Bakk and Sergeant Dustin Cain knew this fact all too well.

Dustin has always loved dogs and when he was in the Air Force, he immediately asked for the requirements to become a military dog handler.

He worked hard day in and out just to earn the right and it didn’t take long before he got his very first army dog.

When Dustin was called and got deployed at Busan Air Base in South Korea, Bakk was there to welcome him.

The German Shepherd instantly knew he was going to be his human partner and to no surprise, the two clicked in a blink.

Bakk and Dustin had each others’ backs.

To have Bakk was such a blessing.

Dustin was dragged by sadness when he got separated from his wife and young sons.

Thankfully, Bakk was there to ease the pain and loneliness brought on by being away from his family.

Despite their beautiful relationship, Dustin knew their friendship while they’re in service wouldn’t last that long.

That’s why he didn’t let himself get too attached to Bakk, especially since he has a soft spot for dogs.

Sadly, the time finally came when Dustin was reassigned to his hometown, Idaho.

Of course, he was overly ecstatic to meet his family again, however, that also meant he’d leave his partner Bakk behind.

He left South Korea with a broken heart.

But deep down in his heart, he knew they would meet again – someday.

Unfortunately, after almost a year, Bakk started limping. They soon discovered that he had torn cruciate ligament, like an ACL but for dogs.

Bakk was already 7 years old and wasn’t too healthy to undergo surgery.

With all the issues ongoing, however, he was a candidate for adoption.

As soon as Dustin learned about it, he immediately applied to adopt his old furry partner. When everything was settled, American Humane, led by Dr. Lesa Staubus, brought Bakk home to Dustin in Boise, Idaho.

A much-awaited reunion.

Dustin was too excited to see Bakk again.

That day, he was in a room full of cameras, all ready to witness their much-awaited reunion.

Dustin also brought his beloved wife and son with him. However, he was a little worried whether Bakk would still recognize him and how would he interact with his sons.

Dr. Staubus and Bakk arrived and upon opening the door to the room, Bakk dashed straight to Dustin. There’s no doubt, he knew the face of his partner so well.

It almost looked like they didn’t get separated for a year.

Not just Bakk and Dustin, but everyone was happy that the two were back in each others’ arms.

As it turned out, upon arriving home, Bakk was a gentle giant around Dustin’s youngest son and was very playful with his eldest.

Mission accomplished!
