Pregnant horse rescued from slaughterhouse gives birth to ‘miracle baby’
Fancy was not only almost denied the right to be a mother, but also the right to live.
The pregnant mare was scheduled to be sent to the slaughterhouse and made into food.
Thankfully, the good-hearted folks at Crossfire Equine Rescue swooped in to save the day.
They rescued Fancy and brought her to their Texas ranch. Even though Annie Shurtleff and her staff at Crossfire Equine Rescue had the best intentions for Fancy, the horse was terrified of them.
Poor Fancy was scared of humans after surviving abuse and the slaughterhouse auction where she was almost sent to die. Still, the staff was determined to win Fancy’s trust.
These people would go out of their way to spend time being close to Fancy so that she knew they were safe people.
They would even go so far as to sleep in the barn with her.
It wasn’t long before Fancy could see that these were truly friendly and dedicated people who wanted to help her.
Once the staff was able to get closer to Fancy, they were able to be more affectionate with her and give her the love and care she needed.
“Fancy now gets all four feet done, takes baths, gets groomed, and loves kisses,” a video on the rescue’s YouTube page explains.
They also helped to prepare for her birth. Fancy was about 300 days pregnant when she arrived. According to Deep Hollow Ranch, a horse is typically pregnant for about 11 months.
Thanks to the staff making Fancy so comfortable, her birth went extremely well.
Fancy had a healthy Palomino filly naturally without complications.
That horse would have never been born had it not been for the hard work and care of Crossfire Equine Rescue. She’s Fancy’s miracle baby.
Eventually, Fancy and her baby were adopted into homes where they would be safe, loved, and cared for for the rest of their days.
“I’m so glad Fancy has finally made it home… it’s hard to believe even now that she has been adopted! I still want to cry… our baby girl has found her a great love and new life!! So proud and happy for her!” Crossfire Equine Rescue wrote on their Facebook page.
“She’s come a long way from being an untouchable scared little horse. I know Lisa will take her to the next chapter in her life and that’s exactly where she needs to be. Thank you Lisa Adams you were worth the wait!”
Fancy’s story ended up going viral.
Her video was viewed almost 440,000 times on YouTube.
“I just want to thank you for rescuing this sweet horse. She is truly beautiful and didn’t deserve that type of abuse. The foal is also a cutie! You now have a new sub for rescuing Fancy,” one commenter wrote.
“The little guy is so cute. I so want to take him home with me. Good luck with the little guy. And thank you for rescuing them,” said another.
