Christmas may have come and gone again, but stories like this show us how we should behave around different people no matter the occasion.
Misty Wolf went through a terribly difficult pregnancy. At just five and a half months, she went into labor.
She rushed into the hospital, not knowing what would happen next.
She had been pregnant with twins. Sadly, only one of them would survive.
Miraculously, Matthew was able to pull through. But the journey was incredibly difficult.
He would spend almost four months in the intensive care unit. Amazingly, the doctors saved his life. But it came at a cost.
Matthew was completely blind. The doctors also said that he would never talk or learn to walk. But they were wrong.
Eventually, Matthew took his first steps. And a little later than most kids, he learned to speak. Misty was amazed at her miracle child. She wanted to give him every chance to enjoy a full life as he grew up.
The doctors later diagnosed Matthew with autism. Yet they were amazed that he could communicate with words.
As Matthew grew up, he became a happy child. No one in Misty’s family cared that he was different. He was their family member, and he deserved to be treated like anyone else.
By the time he was six, Matthew had become obsessed with Christmas, like most children.
He was determined to meet Santa. So one day, Misty took him to a Santa’s workshop at the mall. Misty was a little worried about how the man playing Santa would respond to her son.
Just before it was Matthew’s turn to meet Santa, Misty whispered to Santa “He is blind and autistic and very interested in Santa.”
This news might have intimidated some people. But the man playing this Santa just took in the news with a calm confidence. He told Misty “Say no more,” and perched onto his knees to say hi.
The Santa proceeded to give Matthew an experience that the child would never forget. He let Matthew touch his outfit and even encouraged the boy to yank on his beard.
The boy kept on asking Santa questions about the elves, the reindeer, delivering the presents and so much more. Santa was more than happy to answer all of Matthew’s questions.
Eventually, the Santa asked Matthew if he wanted anything else.
The boy said that he wanted to feel “his eyes that twinkle,” like in the poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Santa was more than happy to oblige, letting the boy touch his eyes.
Lastly, the Santa came up with one final idea.
He asked the boy if he’d ever felt a real reindeer. The boy said no, so Santa picked the boy up and took him over to the reindeer prop in the workshop set.
Then Matthew thanked Santa and went back to his mom, more excited than ever. Misty was amazed at how well the man could communicate with Matthew. He is surely a hero!
Most people can learn from the man that played Santa that day. We may not all have training to talk to people who have special needs. But we should all know how to talk to others with respect.
