Man couldn't stand sight of stray dogs on street so he adopts 450 of them

How many dogs are “too many” dogs?

Four? Three? Well, two are already a handful. But when it comes to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs, there’s no such thing as “too much”.

All over the world, hundreds of thousands of animals, including dogs, need protection and shelter. And when that call came to a Serbian man, he decided to do something about it, even if it means taking in more than just a handful.

In a sanctuary in Serbia, the staff takes care of the dogs in different ways.

The dogs can manage as there are plenty of moments and dogs to socialize with. They bite playfully, tumble, and run after each other.

On hotter days, the staff cranks open the water and aim the hose over the dogs. Then, the jolly howling and sprightly jumping commence under the spray of water.

On days when they feel like spending more energy than usual, the staff kicks out a football. The dogs would run after it, then run after each other, not really giving care to the rules of the game.

The dogs are happy and well taken care of.

Founder Sasa Pejčić took all of these dogs in. And if you’re wondering how many dogs are too many dogs, their sanctuary is home to over 400 dogs.

It all started with Pejčić’s realization. All around him, he sees dogs suffering daily. Stray dogs are abused, starved, and lonely. It’s either someone adopts them or they end up at the hands of dogcatchers – which would mean the end of the road for them.

At first, Pejčić began taking in as many dogs he can realistically look after.

But with people who have boundless hearts like him, “realistically” can be skewed into “every dog in need”.

Fortunately, they found a place to house the dogs. They found their organization on an old riding stable. This gave him and his staff enough room for the dogs to run around as much as they please.

Pejčić’s shelter is supported by The Harmony Fund.

The US-based organization is geared toward helping small and independent rescue shelters around the world, much like what Pejčić has.

Through his shelter, they turn donations into nutritional and health security for the dogs. Instead of foraging and begging for food, the dogs just congregate in their usual feeding spots when dinner is ready.

They also receive medical care like checkups, medication, and getting neutered.

This place didn’t just give these dogs a home.

“Here they are loved and not expected to do anything other than to simply be dogs,” Laura Simpson, founder of the Harmony Fund, told The Dodo. “Many are adopted out internationally to good homes, and others will spend their remaining days at the sanctuary.”

The shelter currently runs solely on donations, as advertised on The Harmony Fund’s website. But despite the difficulties, Pejčić and his staff achieved something truly remarkable.

It may just be a shelter for some, but for these 400 or so dogs, it’s a safe haven and a dreamy doggie paradise. You can check out The Harmony Fund’s link if you’re interested in donating.
