Shipbuilder re-hones his craft to create custom wooden bathtubs and they're stunning

You’ve seen the glory of NK Woodworking & Design’s master-craft wooden staircases before. Now the renowned wood-craft company is letting us know that gorgeous wood combined with phenomenal design and functionality doesn’t stop with our steps.

In addition to their fairytale-like staircases, the company puts its hand to intricate flooring as well, and now they have added another wooden luxury item to their repertoire. Wooden bathtubs.

A few years ago, the company released its Lotus Bathtub collection.

Fashioned of gorgeous local and exotic hardwoods and hand-molded into a composite design, these bathtubs are truly works of art.

The Seattle based company was founded by Nathie Katzoff in 2011.

Katzoff claims that his passion and inspiration for his craft began when he was just five years old. He loved to paint naturalistic landscapes and equally loved engineering impressive projects with his Lego collection. By the time he was a teenager, he knew he wanted to be a master wood craftsman for the rest of his life.

At sixteen, I got my first carpentry job building a composite timber frame home in New England, and at eighteen, went to a boat building school in Maine to continue my path in expertise of craft. After working as a wooden boat builder for many years, in 2011, I decided to start my own business based around my love of fine wood furniture and fine woodwork,” the former shipbuilder told Bored Panda in an interview.

My goal was to merge my interests of art and nature along with my honed appreciation for the fine craft of woodworking. Over the last nine years, we ended up winning many awards and getting recognized worldwide for our sculptural curved stairways along with our sculptural baths,” Katzoff continued.

When you look at his hand-crafted baths, it’s no wonder they’ve won prizes…and come with a heft price tag.

While there is no set pricing info available without request, rumor has it that these bad boys start at an asking price of around $30,000 dollars.

According to Katzoff, there’s good reason the price is set so high on his artfully made wooden bathtubs.

With every bath being different, it varies on complexity. However, it often takes us three or four months to make a bath. The most extreme custom bath (no public photos available) we made took almost a year to create. These are art-level pieces priced similarly to nice cars and handmade high-end art furniture,” Katzoff explains.

His wooden bathtubs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Since they are made to order, each one is uniquely its own, with patrons getting to opt for different wood choices, sizes, and finishes.

For the stone-and-wood-style lovers, NK Woodworking & Design also crafts stunning inserts. And yes, they can come with as many jets as you want.

In these wooden bathtubs, bathers can relax in the luxury that nature affords us with her unique materials.

The unique geometry and forms that are created are present everywhere if we only pay attention. As a designer and artist who works with wood and glass, my goal in my work is to emulate or celebrate the natural materials and natural forms found in the world and bring them to the built environments,” Katzoff reveals his source of inspiration.

Before you decide to try and build one of these bad boys on your own, you should know that it’s Katzoff’s trade secret that makes it work so well in terms of function as well as art. The former shipbuilder has developed a time-hardened approach to how he finishes these bathtubs.

It’s that process that sets them apart from any other. Through his finish technique, the wooden bathtubs will insulate your bathwater and keep it warmer significantly longer than bathtubs made of standard porcelain or metal materials and is part of what makes the price tag skyrocket.

The nature-loving design enthusiast also revealed that he will be branching out in his craft even further.

Although wood is my favorite medium, I have started doing some very exciting projects with bronze and glass and look forward to sharing more of these with the world in the coming years,” Katzoff concludes.

All we can really say to that is if these wooden bathtubs are any indicator, he’s going to thrive at whatever it is he puts his hands to next.
