This couple got way more than they bargained for when Dusty showed up on their doorstep in Brooklyn. They don’t remember a cat being part of the housing agreement. Dusty started hanging around Nate and Emily’s stoop when they moved into their new apartment in April of 2019.
Nate says he didn’t even want to adopt a cat.
Or so he thought. That was, of course, before he fell in love with the white cat who jumped into his lap and curled up for some snuggles one day. It was love at first purr.
When Nate and Emily took their new stoop kitty to the vet to get her checked out they discovered she wasn’t going to be the lone stoop kitty for long, as she was already four weeks pregnant!
With cats only having a gestation period of just 64 days, they were about halfway through Dusty’s pregnancy. It was time to start preparing for Dusty’s delivery. Nate and Emily began researching how to make this the most enjoyable labor and delivery experience for the soon-to-be mama cat.
They prepared a spot for the sweet cat in their closet.
When the vet told them she was expecting only three or four kittens, they were shocked when the newly named Mama Dusty had seven kittens just a month later in their closet. Those kittens stayed in that closet for almost a month.
Remember how Nate and Emily weren’t looking to adopt a cat?
Well, now they had eight of them and the two became the ultra-involved cat parents. They watched like a hawk as their new kitten grandchildren ate to ensure every baby was eating. When they discovered DJ, or Dusty Junior, was being left out a lot, they continued to place DJ near Dusty to be fed.
They expected DJ to be the runt of the litter, as he was struggling to keep up with his siblings when it came to eating. Turns out, though, that he’s the craziest kitten of them all and has the largest personality.
Every kitten has its own unique personality with names to match.
Mohawk is an equally wild child to DJ. Mohawk and DJ are the last to go to sleep and the first to wake up. Freckles and Spot are inseparable. They eat together. They play together. They spend all of their time together.
Then you have Frenchie, who is, shockingly, the bougie of the kittens. Nate describes her as “elegant and refined.” Then we also have Cow, and he’s a mama’s boy. There’s always one in every family!

Nate and Emily have lined up perfect family’s for their crazy kittens but for now, they’re busy playing cat parents and grandparents to their stoop kitty’s liter.
Nate said he wasn’t looking to adopt a cat but Dusty sure was looking to adopt them. Maybe she was also looking for the perfect cat grandparents too! If that’s the case, may we just say “Well played, Dusty. Well played.”
You can stay up to date with Dusty on her Instagram. You will be able to see Emily twinning with Dusty, Nate carrying around kittens in a basket (#swoon) and dozens of adorable sleeping cat photos. We could all use more sleeping cat photos in our life!
