Before going inside a shop, woman gives her dog her jacket to stay warm

While it might be great to take your dog with you when you run errands, it does come with some pros and cons. On the one hand, your dog can get in some exercise. On the other hand, many businesses do not allow you to bring your dog inside. So, what do you do when you have your dog with you and can’t take them inside? Well, if you are like many people, you tie them up outside.

One Massachusetts dog owner even took the extra step of leaving her dog her jacket so he could stay warm and cozy while she stepped inside.

The dog was spotted by Kristina Hollie and her coworkers while they waited for their bus at Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. The dog and his owner were in the area running errands. As the pair stopped outside the post office, his mom tied him to a tree outside. She then did something that warmed the hearts of Hollie and her coworkers.

“It was very cold and windy out,” Hollie told The Dodo. “I noticed that he was visibly shaking. She obviously noticed too because she immediately took off her jacket and covered the dog as he sat. Maybe she thought he would kick it off, so she bent down and zipped it up around him!”

Now, he would be warm while she quickly went inside to do her business. For his part, the dog sat quietly as he waited for his owner’s return.

“As soon as she got up and walked past me, I told her that what she did was incredibly sweet and thoughtful,” Hollie said. “She just replied, ‘Thank you! I don’t want him to be cold!’”

The dog got a lot of attention from people who passed by, many who couldn’t resist taking his picture. Some even made comments when they saw the pooch sitting quietly in the jacket.

“I saw two or three other people walk past him and comment that he looked very cute and very warm,” Hollie said.

In many cases, dogs do not need a coat or jacket when out in the cold, especially if the dog is native to the region. The fur of most dogs is enough to keep them warm, though if the weather is colder than normal you might consider wrapping them in another protective layer to keep warm.

Short-haired, senior, or puppies can benefit from the additional warmth that a jacket provides. If you want to put a jacket on your dog look for those that cover the neck and belly for the best coverage. Keep in mind that your dog might be uncomfortable wearing a jacket. If this is the case, do not force them to wear it.

If you want to buy your dog a personalized jacket to wear when it gets cold, keep a few things in mind. First, look for clothing that is easy to get on and off. When looking at fit, make sure that the leg openings aren’t too constrictive and allow for full freedom of movement. The jacket should be snug, but not too tight.

The type of material is also important as you don’t want your dog to get too hot while wearing the jacket. Wool is a good material. It is warm, but can also be itchy for your dog and hard to wash. Another option is acrylic, which is warm, easy to care for, and soft.
